John’s Pink Grapefruit Orange Slushy

Back in 2020 when we were both on a short-term diet, my husband invented a refreshing and delicious low-calorie fruit drink made with a grapefruit, one of our permitted fruits at the time. Now that we’re no longer on that protocol, we have since added an orange as well. John’s pink grapefruit orange slushy is truly delicious, suitable for children and adults alike, and with its lovely frothy top, you feel like you’re drinking a very special cocktail!

Suitable for various approaches to diet, such as low carb, low calorie, Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Changing Habits Hunter Gatherer Protocol, HCG protocol (all phases), paleo, keto, dairy free, gluten free, alcohol free, no added sugar, vegetarian, vegan, and I’m sure many more.

John’s pink grapefruit orange slushy is also a great choice for everyday life once you’ve reached your target weight! I serve it all year round, and it’s especially appreciated at barbecues in the summer, and no-one ever guesses it’s healthy! Serves 2-4.

This recipe is suitable for Thermomix TM6, TM5 and TM31.

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh pink grapefruit
  • 1 fresh orange or blood orange
  • 150 g ice cubes
  • 450-500 g water

Method

  1. Peel grapefruit and orange, either by hand or by cutting a thin slice off each end and cutting off peel from top to bottom (see step photo).
  2. Divide peeled grapefruit and peeled orange into 3-5 cm pieces, place in TM bowl, add ice cubes and 450 g water, blend 2 min/speed 8, then have a taste and see 1st tip if you’d like it thinner. Serve straight away and enjoy, with compliments from John – cheers!

Janie’s Tips

  1. As fruit sizes vary (our peeled grapefruit was 175 g and the peeled orange was 100 g), feel free to adjust water amount each time to suit your preferred result, and blend longer if desired.
  2. I like to use organic fruits for best flavour and to avoid chemicals.
  3. Please remember that grapefruit and its juice should not be consumed when taking certain medications – please ask your doctor.
  4. This recipe is gluten free (GF), dairy free (DF), vegetarian and vegan.
